13 August 2018 The Risk & Assurance Group (RAG) will award 1,000 US dollars to the individual who donates the most valuable intellectual property to the community of communications risk and assurance professionals during the next twelve months.
From time to time there are professionals who go to great lengths to share their work with others, without seeking any financial reward. They may allow others to copy frameworks or other reference documents that they have authored, or they may distribute free software that they developed. RAG wishes to encourage this behaviour and promote the best examples by offering an annual award for the top contribution to the professional community.
To qualify for the award, the donor must encourage RAG members to use their work by either:
- promoting the use of their work through their participation at one of RAG’s events; or
- allowing their work to be distributed via the RAG website.
To be eligible, the donor must also license their intellectual property so it may be freely used by other professionals, or else put their intellectual property into the public domain. Donors must have obtained the necessary permission to share any work created as part of their employment. RAG intends to foster good practice by also using this award to educate professionals about intellectual property law and the ways to share their work whilst ensuring property rights are respected. A robust understanding of intellectual property law is of benefit both to those who wish to share good practice and software tools, and also those using the documents and software.
The award will be judged by members of the RAG Committee.
More information about the rules for the award can be found here.
Notes for Editors
The Risk & Assurance Group (RAG) is dedicated to improving the practice of risk management, business assurance, fraud management and security within the providers of electronic communications services. RAG is a not-for-profit corporation run by experts with extensive experience of risk and assurance work within communications providers. We seek to facilitate the education and networking of professionals to improve standards of performance, reduce waste, and better serve customers. Practitioners working for telcos and regulators may attend our events free of charge; financial support is provided by specialist vendors with an interest in highlighting the importance of the work done in this field, and in expanding its remit. It also represents an increasingly important aspect of RAG’s work as the business model of many telcos is evolving to embrace the increased distribution of intellectual property over the internet.
